About This Work

The Tanya (full title: Likutei Amarim — Collected Sayings) is the foundational text of Chabad philosophy, written by Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi and first published in 1796.

Divided into five sections:

  1. Likutei Amarim (the main book) — A guide to divine service explaining the structure of the Jewish soul, the nature of love and awe of God, and the path of the beinoni (intermediate person)
  2. Sha’ar HaYichud VeHaEmunah — Gate of Unity and Faith; a philosophical treatise on divine unity
  3. Iggeret HaTeshuvah — Letter of Repentance; on the nature and practice of teshuvah
  4. Iggeret HaKodesh — Holy Letter; a collection of letters on various topics
  5. Kuntres Acharon — Final Pamphlet; additional philosophical discussions

The Tanya has been printed hundreds of times and is studied daily by Chabad Chassidim worldwide.
