Ein Od Milvado — There Is Nothing But Him

Hebrew: אֵין עוֹד מִלְּבַדּוֹ | Source: Devarim 4:35

“You have been shown to know that the Lord is God — there is nothing other than Him.” (Devarim 4:35) “Know this day and take it to your heart, that the Lord is God in the heavens above and on the earth below — there is nothing else.” (Devarim 4:39)

The phrase “Ein od milvado” is the foundational metaphysical statement of Chabad theology.

The Radical Meaning

“There is nothing other than Him” — taken literally, this means that the apparent independent existence of all created beings is ultimately illusory. At the deepest level of reality, there is only God.

This is NOT the claim that the physical world doesn’t exist. Rather: the physical world exists, but its existence is not independent — it is entirely derived from, and sustained by, the continuous creative will of the Ein Sof (Infinite).

The Baal Shem Tov’s Interpretation

The Baal Shem Tov’s radical teaching: even the evil inclination, even the klipot — even these are ultimately expressions of the Ein Sof. There is no domain where God is truly absent; there is only more or less concealment.

This transforms the spiritual battle: one is not fighting against an independent evil but uncovering the Divine spark buried within everything.

Practical Implications

  • Fear and worry — if Ein od milvado is true, there is nothing to fear but God; all other fears are misplaced
  • Prayer — addressing God is always effective, because there is literally only God to address
  • Outreach — bringing this awareness to others is the highest service, for it reveals the truth of reality
