The Five Levels of the Soul (Nefesh, Ruach, Neshamah, Chayah, Yechidah)

Hebrew: נפש רוח נשמה חיה יחידה

Chabad Chassidus teaches that the human soul is not a single entity but comprises five ascending levels (also called partzufim of the soul), each corresponding to a different world in the Divine order.

The Five Levels

1. Nefesh (נֶפֶשׁ) — The Vital/Animal Soul

The lowest rung of the Divine soul, Nefesh gives life to the physical body. It enclothes itself in the blood and is the direct interface between the spiritual soul and the body. The Nefesh is also used to describe the animal soul (nefesh ha-behemit) — the natural, instinctual dimension of the human being.

2. Ruach (רוּחַ) — The Spirit

The emotional dimension of the soul. Ruach governs the midot (character traits and emotions) — love, fear, joy, humility, etc. In Kabbalistic mapping, Ruach corresponds to the six emotional sefirot (Chesed through Yesod).

3. Neshamah (נְשָׁמָה) — The Breath/Higher Soul

The intellectual dimension of the soul, governing Chabad — Chochmah (wisdom), Binah (understanding), and Daat (knowledge). The Neshamah is the level at which the Jew connects to Torah and the Divine intellect. In Tanya, it is described as cheilek Eloka mi-ma’al mamash — “a literal part of God above.”

4. Chayah (חַיָּה) — The Living Essence

Beyond the garments of intellect and emotion, Chayah corresponds to the level of Chochmah in its most transcendent form — a flash of Divine illumination. It is largely beyond conscious access and manifests as the soul’s intuitive, immediate grasp of truth.

5. Yechidah (יְחִידָה) — The Singular/Unique

The highest level, Yechidah is the point of absolute union with the Divine — “the singular one.” It corresponds to the level of Keter (crown) and is the essence of the soul that is never separated from God. The mesiras nefesh (self-sacrifice) of a Jew draws from this level.

In Tanya

The Alter Rebbe discusses the soul primarily through the lens of Nefesh and Neshamah — the animal soul and the Divine soul — as these are the two forces competing within a person’s conscious life. The higher levels (Chayah, Yechidah) are discussed in later chapters and in Shaar HaYichud VeHaEmunah.
