Anochi YHVH Elokecha — I Am the Lord Your God
Hebrew: אָנֹכִי יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ | Source: Shemot 20:2
“I am the Lord your God who took you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery.”
The first of the Ten Commandments — which is unique in being a statement of identity rather than a command.
The Sages’ Teaching
The Sages teach that Anochi is an Aramaic acronym: “Ana Nafshi Ktivit Yehavit” — I have written and given My very self [in the Torah]. In giving the Torah, God gave not just instructions but His very essence — the Torah is a vehicle of the Divine Self.
The Alter Rebbe’s Analysis
Anochi opens with the Aleph (alef) — the primal letter that represents the chochmah of the Ein Sof before any articulation. The word then descends through the letters: the infinite enters into language, which enters into consciousness, which enters into the world.
The God Who Took You Out of Egypt
Why does God identify Himself through the Exodus rather than through creation? Chabad: because what matters to human beings is not abstract cosmological power but personal involvement — God who acts in history on behalf of individuals. The God of the Exodus is the God who responds to prayer, who saves individuals, who is personally present in human affairs.
