The Ten Sefirot — Divine Attributes

Hebrew: עֶשֶׂר סְפִירוֹת

The ten sefirot are the primary structure of Kabbalistic cosmology — the ten Divine attributes or “emanations” through which God manifests in the world. They appear in all worlds (Atzilut, Beriah, Yetzirah, Asiyah) and form the inner structure of the human soul.

The Ten Sefirot

Crown (Keter — כֶּתֶר)

The transcendent “crown” — the level above conscious experience. Keter is the Divine will that precedes wisdom. It is the interface between the Ein Sof (infinite) and the structured sefirot. Often distinguished into three aspects:

  • Atik Yomin — the ancient of days, purely transcendent
  • Arich Anpin — the long-face (patient/macro-will)
  • Ratzon — pure will

Wisdom (Chochmah — חָכְמָה)

The first flash of insight — pure, undeveloped, instantaneous. The “point” before elaboration. In the soul it corresponds to bitul (self-nullification) and intuitive perception of truth. In the human cognitive process: the “aha” moment.

Understanding (Binah — בִּינָה)

The “womb” that receives the seed of Chochmah and develops it into full comprehension. Binah is the mother (ima) of the lower seven sefirot — from her, the emotional attributes are born. In human terms: the ability to elaborate, analyze, and understand deeply.

Knowledge (Daat — דַּעַת)

Not always counted separately (making room for Keter), Daat is the deep “knowing” that unifies Chochmah and Binah — the internalization that moves from understanding to felt reality. In relationships: intimacy and connection.

Loving-kindness (Chesed — חֶסֶד)

Expansive love, generosity, giving without limit. The right arm. In Divine terms: God’s unconditional giving of existence.

Strength/Severity (Gevurah — גְּבוּרָה)

Restraint, judgment, contraction. The left arm. Not cruelty, but the necessary limiting of chesed — withholding in order to give properly. Reverence (yirah) belongs here.

Beauty/Harmony (Tiferet — תִּפְאֶרֶת)

The harmonizing center between chesed and gevurah — compassion, truth, balance. The central column. The heart. Corresponds to the Torah.

Eternity/Victory (Netzach — נֶצַח) and Acknowledgment (Hod — הוֹד)

The “legs” — carrying Divine energy downward into the world. Netzach is the persistence and drive of Divine will; Hod is its acknowledgment and acceptance. Together they represent the rhythm of Divine speech.

Foundation (Yesod — יְסוֹד)

The channel through which Divine energy flows into Malchut — the righteous person (tzaddik) through whom blessing flows. The covenant.

Kingdom/Sovereignty (Malchut — מַלְכוּת)

The tenth sefirah — passive receiver, vessel, kingdom. Malchut has no light of its own; it manifests what it receives. It corresponds to speech (dibbur), the Shekhinah (Divine Presence), and the Jewish people.

The Chabad Grouping

In Chabad Chassidus, the sefirot are grouped as:

  • Chabad (Chochmah, Binah, Daat) — the intellectual triad governing the mind
  • Chagat (Chesed, Gevurah, Tiferet) — primary emotions
  • Nehym (Netzach, Hod, Yesod, Malchut) — secondary emotions and expression

The Sefirot in the Human Soul

Each sefirah has a corresponding faculty in the soul:

  • Chabad = intellect
  • Chagat = primary emotions (love, fear, compassion)
  • Nehym = secondary emotions and speech
