Tractate Berachot — Key Teachings in Chassidus

Hebrew: מַסֶּכֶת בְּרָכוֹת

Tractate Berachot, the first tractate of the Talmud, deals with prayers and blessings and is extensively cited in Chabad discussions of tefillah.

”Know Before Whom You Stand” (Berachot 28b)

“When Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai was ill… he said: ‘Remove the vessels so they will not become impure, and prepare a throne for Hezekiah, King of Judah, who is coming.‘” And earlier: “Know before Whom you stand.”

The Alter Rebbe cites “da lifnei mi atah omeid” as the essential preparation for prayer — the entire Chassidic approach to tefillah flows from this phrase. Knowing before Whom one stands requires hitbonenut (contemplation) and results in bittul (self-nullification).

The Amidah: Standing Before the King (Berachot 28b-29a)

The Talmudic regulations about standing still for the Amidah, not interrupting, not looking around — all express the spiritual state of standing before the King — the consciousness of absolute Divine presence.
