Chabad Chassidic Teachings
Why is Vayechi a Closed Portion?
Uniquely among Torah portions, Vayechi is setumah — a “closed” parsha with no break between it and the previous one. Rashi explains: because with Jacob’s death, the eyes and hearts of Israel were “closed” due to the pain of beginning slavery.
Chassidus reads this differently: Vayechi is “closed” because it contains within it the hidden light of geulah. The darkness of galut that begins here already contains the seed of redemption. The concealment (setumah) IS the vessel for the highest revelation.
Jacob’s Blessing: Twelve Paths
Jacob’s blessings to the twelve tribes establish the spiritual DNA of each tribe’s unique contribution. Every Jewish soul has its root in one of these twelve pathways — its own particular way of serving God.
”He Lived” — Jacob Lives Forever
Despite describing Jacob’s death, the parsha is titled “he lived.” The Talmud states: “Jacob our father did not die.” Chabad explains: a tzaddik who lives entirely for others — whose life is entirely Torah and mitzvot — transcends death. His influence, teachings, and spiritual energy continue to animate the world.
The same applies to the Rebbe — whose influence continues to grow after his passing in 1994.
