Biography
Rabbi Shmuel Schneersohn (1834–1882), known by the acronym “Maharash” (Moreinu HaRav Shmuel), was the fourth Rebbe of Chabad-Lubavitch. He was the youngest son of the Tzemach Tzedek.
He was known for his active approach to Jewish life, famously teaching: “The world says: if you cannot get under [an obstacle], go over it. I say: l’chatchilah ariber — go over it in the first place!” This teaching of l’chatchilah ariber became a defining motto of Chabad activism.
He traveled extensively throughout Europe on behalf of Russian Jewry, meeting with government officials and influential figures. He was known for his warmth, aristocratic bearing, and concern for every individual.

- Torat Shmuel — His collected Chassidic discourses, spanning many volumes and covering deep themes in Kabbalistic thought
His son, the Rashab, would continue the dynasty.
