Biography

Rabbi Shmuel Schneersohn (1834–1882), known by the acronym “Maharash” (Moreinu HaRav Shmuel), was the fourth Rebbe of Chabad-Lubavitch. He was the youngest son of the Tzemach Tzedek.

He was known for his active approach to Jewish life, famously teaching: “The world says: if you cannot get under [an obstacle], go over it. I say: l’chatchilah ariber — go over it in the first place!” This teaching of l’chatchilah ariber became a defining motto of Chabad activism.
